In the heart of a 200-year-old converted barn, Martins Hi-Fi has created a stunning home cinema that harmoniously blends modern technology with historic architecture. This project showcases how even the most traditional properties can accommodate state-of-the-art entertainment spaces when designed with sensitivity and expertise.
The homeowners approached us with a clear vision – they had always dreamed of having their own cinema room and had identified the ideal space within their beautifully converted barn. With no windows and natural darkness, this room offered the perfect canvas for creating an authentic cinematic experience.
"When clients have a space with no natural light, it's actually ideal for a dedicated cinema," explains Marcus our Installations Manager. "We can control every aspect of the lighting environment, which is essential for optimum viewing conditions."
The brief was comprehensive: seating for up to eight people, simple yet sophisticated operation, and most importantly, cinema-quality audio and visuals. The clients' passion for film drove their desire for an authentic experience that would transport them completely into whatever they were watching.
Our showroom cinema rooms proved invaluable during the planning phase. These demonstration spaces allowed the clients to experience different technologies and configurations firsthand before making decisions for their own project.
"There's really no substitute for experiencing cinema systems in person," notes Marcus. "Reading specifications or watching online videos simply can't convey how a system feels when you're immersed in it."
Based on these experiences, we created detailed design drawings showing the proposed layout, screen wall construction, lighting placement, and audio-visual specifications. These plans provided a clear roadmap for the project and ensured everyone involved shared the same vision.
Working within a historic structure presented unique challenges, requiring close collaboration with the clients' building team. Regular on-site meetings helped coordinate efforts and ensure all modifications respected the character of the property while accommodating modern technology.
We constructed the system to exact Dolby Atmos specifications, ensuring perfect sound reproduction from every seat. Custom cabinetry was designed and built to house the audio-visual equipment and subwoofers, maintaining clean lines and an uncluttered aesthetic despite the sophisticated technology within.
Lighting received particular attention, with carefully positioned LED systems including blue accent lighting around the screen. These elements create the perfect atmosphere while enhancing the viewing experience, allowing for different moods from practical illumination to subtle ambient glow during films.
The seating—perhaps the most visible element of any cinema room—was selected for both comfort and style. Dedicated cinema chairs invite extended viewing sessions while complementing the room's overall design.
The handover process is always a special moment, and this project was no exception. We took time to thoroughly explain the system's operation, providing tips and guidance to help the family get the most from their new cinema.

The finished cinema has become the heart of family entertainment, hosting everything from Disney animations to Marvel blockbusters with equal brilliance. The immersive sound envelops viewers completely, while the crystal-clear visuals bring content to life with stunning detail.
Most importantly, the technology remains discreetly integrated throughout, respecting the historic character of the property while delivering thoroughly modern performance. It's a space where the 200-year-old structure and cutting-edge technology exist in perfect harmony.
